About the work

A Part of Ourselves considers how another person can become part of who we are, even when we are separated by distance or death. Two faces occupy the same blue field, remaining distinct while their boundaries fragment and overlap. Marks, colour and exposed mesh pass between them, suggesting a connection that continues despite physical absence.

Built through layers of acrylic, plaster and silicone, the painting was repeatedly covered, scraped and reworked. The faces emerged gradually, carrying traces of earlier forms within the surface. The work reflects on how those we have loved remain present within memory, identity and the ways we move through the world. Separation may alter a relationship, but it does not necessarily bring that relationship, or its influence to an end.
