Under a Blood Red Sky
began as a single canvas. As the painting developed, I felt it needed to extend further, so I added a second canvas beneath it. This allowed the densely gathered forms to continue downwards and gave the work a greater physical presence.
While making it, I was thinking about displacement, forced migration and the experience of being pushed from one place towards another. The red sky carries much of the painting’s emotional pressure, while the layered blue forms suggest a mass of people, structures or reflections below. The work was shaped by thoughts of survival and loss, and by histories of displacement that continue to repeat, but it remains open to more than one reading.
