A Moonlight Mischief
A Moonlight Mischief
Original Painting | Acrylic and Plaster on Canvas
A Moonlight Mischief carries a lighter touch, though it still holds that sense of solitude running through the collection. A single figure stands beneath a large pale moon, while a magpie perches nearby on the edge of a building, alert and self-contained. The open space between them gives the painting its mood — quiet, watchful, and just slightly playful.
I wanted the magpie to bring a note of mischief into the scene. The title came naturally from that, but also from the fact that a group of magpies is called a mischief. I liked the contrast between the stillness of the composition and the subtle suggestion that something restless or unpredictable might be present within it.
The painting is pared back, but not empty. The moonlit blue, the softened skyline, and the suspended distance between bird and figure give it an atmosphere that feels reflective, but not heavy. It is a work about presence, observation, and the quiet strangeness of city life at night.
