Original Painting | Mixed Media on Canvas

This painting came from the same emotional space as Under a Blood Red Sky and Blue River Under a Red Sky , which I made for the Art For Gaza auction. I was sitting with the weight of history. The image of a crowd under a storm of colour kept returning to me. The red isn’t just a sky here. It presses downward. It feels heavy. Almost like a curtain that might fall. Or a wave that hasn’t broken yet.

The figures below, if you can call them that are dense, almost buried in each other. They don’t move. They hold the ground. There’s something about them that feels ancient and familiar. I wasn’t thinking of one place or one people. But Ireland and Palestine were very much in my mind. The way trauma can pass through generations. The way land can carry grief. The way resistance can be quiet and slow, but unshakable. This is one of those paintings that doesn’t want to resolve. It sits with you. It presses. And maybe that’s the point.

“This piece came from sitting with histories that don’t really end. The sky felt like a weight. The figures below it feel like memory—layered, compressed, but still holding on.” - Anthony

This painting speaks to anyone who’s felt the pressure of inherited memory. It holds a space for grief, for resistance, and for the quiet strength of those who’ve endured more than they could ever say. Crimson Canopy isn’t loud—but it doesn’t let go.
