King Of The World (Hey Ma, you'll never guess where I am)
Original Painting | Acrylic and Plaster on Canvas
King Of The World (Hey Ma, you'll never guess where I am) is a painting about distance, arrival, and that brief, unforgettable moment when life suddenly opens out. A lone figure stands high above a faint city skyline on a raised block, facing an enormous moon and a small drifting cloud. The composition is simple, but it carries that feeling of being suspended between excitement and vulnerability.
I wanted this painting to hold something personal. It grew from the memory of my son going to New York as a young man to live and work. His first phone call home was from the roof of a skyscraper, shouting down the line, “Hey Ma, you'll never guess where I am.” That moment stayed with me — the pride in it, the freedom of it, and also the sense of someone suddenly far away, standing in a world that had just become much bigger.
There is a quiet tenderness in the painting beneath the humour of the title. The figure appears small against the sky, but elevated at the same time — alone, but full of possibility. It is a work about youth, distance, and that strange mix of wonder and separation that comes with watching someone step fully into their own life.
