Tossed Salad carries a lighter energy in the title, but I still wanted the painting to feel considered rather than casual. What interested me was the idea of contrast, fragments, and different elements being brought together without needing to fully settle into one thing. There is humour in the title, but also a sense of disruption, layering, and imbalance.
Working on wood changes the feeling of the surface. It gives the painting a firmer structure, which I liked in relation to the looser, more shifting qualities within the piece itself. That tension between support and movement felt important while making it.
This is a work that leans into play, surface, and contrast, while still holding onto the restraint that runs through much of my practice.
